Makarsankrant/Lori and Pongal Celebration
Makar Sankranti, Lohri, and Pongal are celebrated across India as harvest festivals, reflecting agricultural prosperity and fostering community spirit. Each festival is marked by unique customs, traditions, and food that symbolize gratitude and joy.
Makar Sankranti is celebrated by taking holy dips in rivers, offering prayers to the sun god, and flying kites. The festival is incomplete without traditional foods like sesame seeds, jaggery, and khichdi, which represent the harvest's bounty.
Lohri is marked by lighting bonfires, dancing, and singing traditional songs. People exchange sweets, peanuts, and revri while expressing gratitude for a good harvest.
Pongal, named after the special rice dish, spans four days with unique themes: Bhogi (cleaning), Thai Pongal (harvest celebration), Mattu Pongal (dedicated to cattle), and Kaanum Pongal (family reunions). The festival includes feasting, cultural performances, and gratitude to nature.
At SVIMS, students and staff celebrated these festivals with enthusiasm. Students dressed in traditional attire, distributed tilgul, and gathered around a sacred bonfire with faculty and staff to seek blessings. The event highlighted the rich cultural heritage and unity in celebrating the harvest season.
